Day: 455
Felicia and I woke up this morning without much of a plan, all we really knew was that we had to be out of our hotel by 10am and at the airport by 6pm (the airport being just 30 minutes away from town). We settled on some delicious spicy curry noodles for breakfast while we perused the free tourist materials to decide what should become of our day. After our super rich Malaysian “Old Town” coffee, we settled on taking the bus up to Penang Hill where we would catch a cable-train thingy up to the top of its 2700 feet.
It definitely lived up to its name for being a hill, and the major tourist draw of a “cooler climate” was true, but our personal experience was as follows:
- A 30 minute line to board the train to go up
- A 30 minute uber-crowded ride up the mountain with no view but dense jungle for me and front of my chest for Felicia (as she was crush against me for most of the ride)
- We wandered about for a while at the top of the hill, eating overpriced sweet corn, finally settling in under a gazebo in a mosque to escape the “cooler climate”.
- Another 30 minute wait to go down the hill
- A less crowded 30 minute ride back down, the second half of which Felicia and I were able to steal seats from some kids…
Needless to say it was another of this small towns tourist destinations that let us down, at least they only charged US$1.25 for the round-trip train ride.
Our afternoon ended much as the day had begun, drinking coffee, talking, and being the happy newlyweds we are. We made our way back to the airport on the local bus and decided that even though the locale wasn’t what we had wanted, the trip was definitely worth it, just to spend some time together and alone.
