I had envisioned this blog post to be full of images of whales breaching, crashing down in the water and their tails majestically framed against the blue of the Pacific.  Unfortunately when we took Madalyn out on the ocean in Dana Point to watch for whales on this windy, choppy day for her 9th birthday, our viewing options were limited.  We saw a few dolphins, a buoy full of sea lions, and waves, lots and lots of waves….

But did that stop us from having a good time? Hell no.  Madalyn proceeded to be her extroverted self and asked the captain if she could steer the boat – and he let her.  Then she decided if there weren’t any whales she might as well take advantage of the beautiful ocean day and get completely drenched. While most of the other 45 people on the boat hid under shelter, Madalyn and I sat on the mesh of the catamaran with our hands in the water soaking up the salt and the waves.

At one point we did have a few dolphins right underneath the catamaran pacing us and Madalyn and I were reaching our arms through the mesh to try and touch them.  We couldn’t quite reach them, but after a few minutes when the dolphins left, she turned to me and said “This is the most fun day OF MY LIFE!”

As an uncle, you really can’t ask for a better review than that.

No whales, no problem. It was still a fabulous day with great company!
