Blog post by Felicia
As you can tell from the blog posts, we’re in the peak of wedding season right now. We’ve learned that work never ceases, but children grow up in the blink of an eye. So yesterday we blocked off 36 hours in our schedule to hang out with our niece Regan who celebrates her final single digit birthday this weekend.
I have to admit that every year it gets a little more challenging for me to come up with ideas for their birthdays, and after her sister got to play Cirque du Soleil performer for a day, we were afraid that Regan’s expectations were set pretty high.
Thankfully I chanced upon a Groupon with Star Helicopters last week, and so it was: birthday helicopter ride!
Our nieces are now accustomed to their birthday ‘experience’ being a surprise, so my conversation with her went something like this as we prepared breakfast that morning:
Regan: Felicia, can you please please please please tell me where we’re going? Pleaaase????
Felicia: Hmm okay, it’s a place. That starts with ‘A’ and has 7 letters.
Regan: (without missing a beat) AZKABAN!
I had to stop slicing strawberries and spelled out loud, counting with both hands. Harry Potter, it seems, is now her ‘thing’. [Correct answer: ‘a-i-r-p-o-r-t’]
She was thrilled beyond belief when we pulled up on the tarmac as the choppers sat waiting, and the moment we were airborne, Regan said loud and clear into the headset, “THIS is the best. thing. EVER!!!”.
She was completely smitten during the ride as we saw Los Angeles from above, and gasped with amazement at the Hollywood Reservoir (I had no idea it existed), and of course, when we flew right by the Hollywood Sign and swooped over Griffith Observatory. The freeways of LA look a lot cooler when you’re not sitting on one of them!
As we landed, her little voice, brimming with gratitude and sincerity, crackled with static as it came softly through the headset: “Robbie, Felicia…. thank you so much.”
Happy Birthday, Regan. We love you!
Star Helicopters: Our pilot Ryan Samala was nothing short of outstanding. He was very clear with his narration which allowed Regan to follow the landmarks of Los Angeles very easily, gave us a super smooth ride, and the most amazing landing of any aircraft Rob and I have been in. He put that helicopter down with such delicate grace, perfectly aligned on the ‘H’ on the ground, with nary a bump at all. I wouldn’t know we were back on the ground if I hadn’t looked out of the window and stared at the tarmac beneath us!
We highly recommend Star Helicopters for being so professional, friendly, and helpful, especially in light of the forced-rescheduling (airspace closure due to President Obama’s visit).
